The firsts

The world is gathered in Tokyo Japan for the most prestigious event; however, this year’s competitions are different. First, the summer games are being held one year late; they were supposed to be held in 2020 but when the world came to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event like so many others was postponed.

This is the first time that the summer games are being postponed or rather rescheduled, on past occasions it has been canceled altogether. This is not the only event that was postponed; all the major sporting events that were supposed to be held in 2020 were pushed forward one year. A case in point is the Euro 2020 which was played a month ago, with the only difference being that limited fans were allowed in the field for the first time since the ban.

Unusual times

Tokyo Olympics is being held under very different circumstances, apart from being postponed, the games are largely behind a closed door, no spectators are allowed, a state of emergency has been declared to curb the spread of COVID-19. Currently, the world and Japan, in particular, are reeling under a new wave that is spreading fast. If such restrictions were not put in place, we probably would see a spike in infections given that the summer games attract huge gatherings, for both local and international fans.

Also, it should not be lost that the games attract players from every corner of the world. A spike in infection in the Olympics villages and Tokyo at large would mean every part of the world will be threatened once people pack and leave the hosting city and nation. Therefore, it makes sense to take all the precautions. A month of fun would not be worth the infections and subsequent hospitalizations and in some cases deaths as a result of COVID-19 related complications.

New games

All is not gloom as the summer games have some good tidings, there are new competitions which have been introduced and reintroduced in the 2020 Olympics. There is confusion on whether we should call it 2020 or 2021. We will use both as they will be referring to the same event.

Although the games were postponed to 2021, the Tokyo 2020 label was retained. The 2021 games will see the introduction of a 3×3 basketball. This is a variation of a basketball game that is played three aside. Dubbed the largest urban team sport, the 3×3 basketball format is the latest promotion by the world basketball governing body, FIBA. Apart from being adopted for the 2020 Olympics, it is also set to be played in the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Another competition that is making its debut in the 2021 summer games is the Freestyle BMX; this is a bicycle motor cross rides on BMX bikes. The event will also see the re-introduction of Madison cycling, softball, and baseball. New policies also allow the organizing committee to add new games into the program as part of augmenting the main event. Under this window, Tokyo 2020 will see the tournaments such as Karate, Surfing, Sport climbing, and skateboarding make an Olympic debut.

The excitement with the skateboarding fraternity has been evident, they are treating this participation as a recognition that the game has come of age. They are ready to show the world that skateboarding is a serious event and more attention should be given to a game that is mostly found in urban areas. What will be the future of Skateboarding after the summer games? It will be interesting to watch how things unfold.

The official program features 339 events where 33 sports will be played including:

  • Aquatics such as swimming, diving, marathon swimming
  • Baseball,
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Table tennis
  • Handball
  • Gymnastics
  • Volleyball
  • Athletics
  • Football, among others.

Set to end on August 24th, the Tokyo Games will have set a new record, some describing the tournament as the most controversial. However, looking from a positive side, the games which are being held under very different circumstances will provide valuable lessons on how major sporting events should be organized in a midst of crisis. Perhaps in the future, we will not have to postpone a major event; we can still hold it but with the special arrangement as postponing has proved to be very expensive.
