How To Turn Off Microsoft Edge

Everyone who owns a computer knows all too well about the very unpopular and joked about Internet Explorer. Today, this web browser is a distant memory for most people, especially since Microsoft replaced it with Edge in 2015. Like in the case of the disdained Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge comes preinstalled on any Windows device.

Microsoft Edge was launched to serve as a better web browser for user’s experience, and at the same time to overshadow Internet Explorer’s bad reputation. Nevertheless, despite the new and improved Microsoft browser, most people are happier using other web browsers such as Google Chrome, Opera, or Mozilla Firefox. Therefore, since it is difficult to uninstall Edge, you may need to turn it off on your computer to use another web browser.

However, you must first make sure that a simple setting is not what’s chasing you off from Microsoft Edge to another browser. Small mistakes such as having disabled JavaScript on your browser can hinder you from enjoying interactive elements such as audio or animations. Is It Possible To Uninstall Microsoft Edge?

The fact that Microsoft Edge is a core part of the Windows operating system makes it nearly impossible to uninstall the browser. However, there are still ways to uninstall Microsoft Edge, but very likely that none of them will work, depending on the updates you have installed. Hence, you are better off disabling Edge, which basically serves the same purpose as uninstalling it.

How to Turn Off Edge by Setting Default Apps

The easiest way to make sure that Microsoft Edge does not run on your computer is to remove it as the default web browser. You can do this by following the steps below:

  • Go to Settings by simply typing “settings” in the search bar.
  • Tap on “Apps”.
  • Select “Default apps” on the left pane.
  • Under “Web browser,” you must then choose the browser you intend to use as your default program – for instance, Google Chrome.
  • Pick your preferred installed browser from the list and close the window.

This way, you will be using the default browser you chose whenever you click on a link. You will never have to see Microsoft Edge unless you open it yourself.

Additionally, you will need to also set either Adobe Reader or any other program of your choice as the default app for opening PDF files. Essentially, you will follow the same steps above but click on the respective app you wish to use.

How to Turn Off Edge by Renaming a Folder

Alternatively, you can also disable Microsoft Edge by renaming its folder. Once you do this, Windows can no longer find the files, preventing the browser from running.

  • Go to C:/Windows/SystemApps.
  • Click to select the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe folder.
  • Right-click on the folder and select Rename.
  • You can rename the folder to any name you see fit.
  • Then click “Continue,” and the browser should be disabled.

Note that if you ever wish to re-enable Microsoft Edge, simply rename the browser to its original name.

Final Remarks

However, you must note that setting another app as default or renaming the Edge folder is not a permanent solution. In most cases, Microsoft will simply reset Edge as the default program or change the Edge folder when it installs an update. You can stop this by disabling automatic updates for Microsoft Edge. Right-click on your taskbar, select Task Manager and then tap on the Startup tab. You must then right-click Microsoft Edge from the list and tap Disable. This way, you will have disabled Microsoft Edge Updates. Remember that you can never entirely get rid of Microsoft Edge from your computer since it is a core part of Windows OS. Trying to remove the browser forcefully may hurt other programs that rely on Microsoft Edge to operate properly.
